The narrative is split between two characters: fifteen-year-old Kafka Tamura, who decides to run away from home, and an old man, by the name of Satoru Nakata who is able to communicate with cats. From magical realism, suspense and humour to romance and beautiful dialogue, Haruki Murakami fills this book with such incredible range that it feels as if you’re reading all that literature has to offer in 500 pages. Without realising it, I picked one of the best books one could pick to read as a starter. For once, I wanted to read a book for my own enjoyment. Kafka on the Shore (2002) is the first book I picked up and read without any outside influence. ![]() ![]() ![]() The writing style was interesting, but not my cup of tea. Maybe being more familiar with that would have helped.Įven though the book was short, it was really hard to keep going- it didn’t catch my interest at all, as much as I wanted it to. ![]() Those felt a little bit preachy to me, and some of the more Biblical stuff went over my head. I really struggled with it, and the fairy tales and Bible stories didn’t work for me. I definitely hard a hard time relating to Jeanette, and even though we see her over the span of several years, it was really easy to forget that it takes place over several years. ![]() It was a hard book to relate to, and I feel like there’s a lot that went over my head. Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit is definitely not the book for me. The narrator, Jeanette, cuts her teeth on the knowledge that she is one of God’s elect, but as this budding evangelical comes of age, and comes to terms with her preference for her own sex, the peculiar balance of her God-fearing household crumbles. I was just held hostage by two young girls (8/10) until I finished the book.
